Madhesis Aspirations in the New Constitution of Nepal

Sadbhawana Party Chairman Rajendra Mahato has remarked that the ongoing protests in Madhes are to strengthen the nationality of Nepali people. He claimed that the country will not disintegrate but will be stronger and united if the protests of Madhesi people succeed.Leader Mahato said such while talking to media persons at his home district in Sarlahi on Sunday.

“We are not protesting to split the country but for making it stronger,” he said. He said the 11-point demand put forth by the agitating Madhesi Morcha that includes revision on demarcation of federal state borders, proportional inclusive representation and electoral constituencies based on population, among others, should be addressed in a package.Leader Mahato clarified that their protests are not meant for allowing a foreign national a Nepali citizenship so that they could run for top positions of the country like president or vice-president. “I am a son of Madhes,” he said, “I am not in support of allowing rights to foreign national and this fight is not for naturalised citizenship.”The Madhesi people are agitated as the rights to Madhesi people provisioned in the Interim Constitution have been curtailed in the new constitution.
